I have been update one schedule using Schedule % Complete in Primavera P6. The S%C is 37% and de Actual Cost is 36%. The consultant say to me than this is a not a good way to calculated the project progress and say to me to use Duration % Complete. When I added the D%C is 54% of the project. The % different between the S%C and D%C is very big, like 17%. I think than this is wrong to use D%C. Could some one expleme me the big diference between the two % complete? and what I have to use?
The general rule in Primavera P6 is that you can use any of the three methods to update a project, ie physical, duration and units. But, if you are really unsure of the remaining duration, it is always helpful to update using physical %. However, in the event that you are sure of the remaining duration for every activity, I guess you are free to use duration % complete as this would give you a better idea of the completion date.
With regards to using schedule % complete in Primavera P6, it would be better to always use that as your planned percentage. Even when you are using it as the planned percent, be sure to check once again in excel whether your initial percent matches with the ones indicated in e schedule percent completed column in primavera. I had problems with it before.
Schedule % complete is used to calculate the planned value (sch % *bac ). Physical % complete calculates earned value (physical % * bac). Schedule % is dependant on baseline start an data date. If you are not running an ev project and do not have resource information use duration % comp as it looks at how much of your allotted time you have used. If you have resources use performance %.
The Schedule % Complete is to show how much you acheived from the Baseline (Planned Value). Now for comparison, you need to go to the GENERAL tap and see what did you choose for % COMPLETE TYPE, if you choose DURATION, you will compare with Duration % Complete, but if you choose Units, you will compare with Unit % Complete, and if you choose physical, you will compare with % Performance Complete.
Even your schedule is good but the people on site are not working properly, trust me your schedule in Primavera P6 will have so many revision. You should set down with your PROJECT MANAGER and discuss about your schedule, he is the one will make approval of your schedule.
Lastly planner/scheduler in Primavera P6 is not an easy job it takes critical thinking & job analysis, ,make sure that you are familiar with the Scope of Work of the project & Contract Milestone date. Any slippage & negative variance to your schedule, immediately you should rise a FLAG to your Project Manager and discuss, as i said in the above.
Now, don’t lose your hope. Don’t be intimidated to anybody be yourself & do the best effort.
